A Deep Dive into the South West MS Therapy Centre and Its Specialist Physiotherapy Services

For anyone living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or other long-term neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, finding accessible, specialised physical therapy is essential to maintaining independence and quality of life.
The South West MS Therapy Centre, located at West Grange in Clyst Heath, Exeter, has been a vital source of support for over four decades. Led by CEO Caroline Aird, the charity provides a warm, welcoming, and community-focused environment serving individuals across Exeter, East Devon, North Devon, Somerset and Dorset.
In this blog post, we take a closer look at the rich history of the Centre and highlight the specialist Physiotherapy Department, which lies at the heart of its physical rehabilitation services.
Rich History and a Vision for the Future
The charity was established in 1985. In its early days, the Centre lodged initially in the Countess Wear area of Exeter and later in Whipton before relocating to West Grange—a historic Victorian building dating back to the 1880s on the former Digby Hospital site. When the Centre took residency over 25 years ago, fitting its oxygen chamber was no small feat: it had to be craned directly into the building before the roof was put on!
While West Grange holds plenty of heritage, the Board of Trustees recognised around four years ago that an inefficient 19th-century building no longer suits the needs of a modern therapy centre. Rising operational and heating costs have made finding new premises a priority. However, relocating requires careful planning: new premises must accommodate two chambers used for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, oxygen generation facilities, offer ample accessible parking, and remain centrally accessible for members travelling across Devon, Somerset and Dorset.
Today, the charity runs with a core team of 4 full-time equivalents alongside dedicated volunteers. To support running costs, the Centre rents and hires out rooms to like-minded organisations, creating a supportive network of shared values under one roof.
Specialist Physiotherapy: Restoring Strength, Balance, and Mobility
While the Centre offers various therapies, its Physiotherapy Department plays a crucial role in helping members manage symptoms, improve mobility, and boost confidence.
Qualified Neuro and Musculoskeletal Specialists
The Centre contracts three highly skilled Physiotherapists specialising in Neurological and Musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Their expertise ensures that each individual receives care tailored specifically to complex conditions like MS and other Neurological Conditions.
Flexible and Affordable Therapy Options
To ensure these vital therapies remain accessible to everyone, all physiotherapy services are subsidised by the charity:
1:1 One-on-One Sessions: Individual 45-minute clinical sessions tailored to personal goals. £40 for members | £50 for non-members.
Group Therapy Sessions: Structured group environments providing both targeted exercise and social support at £10 per person.
Open Gym: Members can access the Centre's exercise facilities for £5, following personalised programs designed by a physiotherapist that they can carry out independently at their own pace.
Specialist Classes: The physio team leads specialist group classes, including Neuro-Pilates and Balance classes, focused on core stability, posture, and fall prevention.
Bringing Care to North Devon: The Barnstaple Outreach Program
Recognising that travel can be a barrier for many, the Centre has expanded its reach beyond Exeter through an outreach initiative in North Devon.
Held at a local leisure centre in Barnstaple, this popular outreach session accommodates up to 20 people per class. Led by a leisure centre instructor, sessions cost just £6 and provide vital exercise and social connection to the local community.
Whether you are newly diagnosed or looking for long-term symptom management, the South West MS Therapy Centre welcomes members, non-members, and carers alike.
