Every year, a vital campaign takes place across the UK to recognise, celebrate, and support a group of people whose contributions are immeasurable, yet all too often invisible: our unpaid carers.

This year, Carers Week is from 8-14 June.

Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign that shines a spotlight on the millions of individuals who look after a family member, partner, or friend who has a physical or mental illness, disability, or needs extra help as they grow older. This year, the message is Building Carer Friendly Communities

Whether it is helping with daily medication, providing transport, navigating complex healthcare systems, or simply offering a comforting presence during difficult times, carers are the backbone of our healthcare ecosystem. Yet, because this care takes place behind closed doors, the immense emotional, physical, and financial toll it takes on the carers themselves can easily be overlooked.

The Neuro Therapy Network: A Community of Mutual Support

The profound impact of carers is felt deeply within organisations like the Neuro Therapy Network. Supporting more than 15,000 people every week across the UK, Jersey, and Gibraltar, this incredible network of independent therapy centres provides life-enhancing physical therapies, oxygen therapy, counselling, and peer support for individuals living with MS, Parkinson’s, stroke, and other neurological or long-term conditions.

While the professional staff and therapists at these centres do phenomenal work, the true heart of the community relies on a vital partnership: the one between the centres, the members, and their carers.

Why Carers are Crucial for Centre Members

For a member living with a neurological condition, attending a Neuro Therapy Network centre is often a lifeline. But getting there—and maximising the benefits of the therapies—is very frequently a team effort.

  • The Bridge to Care: Neurological conditions can severely impact mobility, energy levels, and cognitive function. Carers are often the physical bridge that makes therapy possible—managing schedules, arranging transport, and physically helping members attend their sessions safely.

  • Consistency and Continuity: Therapies like specialised physiotherapy or oxygen therapy rely on consistency. Carers ensure that the advice, exercises, and lifestyle adjustments discussed at the centre are seamlessly carried over into daily life at home.

  • A Shared Emotional Journey: Living with a chronic neuro-condition presents unique emotional hurdles. Carers stand alongside members through the frustrations and the milestones, providing the emotional stability that allows members to engage fully with their therapies..

Building Carer-Friendly Communities: What We Can Do

Carers give so much of themselves to ensure their loved ones can access the life-changing therapies offered by the Neuro Therapy Network Centres. But who cares for the carers?

Being a carer can be isolating. Many face significant strains on their own mental and physical health. That is why Carers Week is a call to action for all of us to help build a more supportive environment.

Did you know? According to Carers UK, millions of people in the UK are caring completely unpaid for a loved one. Providing this level of care without adequate support can lead to high rates of physical exhaustion, burnout, and social isolation.

If you want to get involved, here is how you can make a difference this week:

  1. Recognise and Acknowledge: If you know someone who is a carer, reach out. A simple phone call, a cup of coffee, or acknowledging the incredible work they do can mean the world.

  2. Support a Local Neuro Therapy Centre: The centres within the Neuro Therapy Network don't just support the individual with the condition; they offer a welcoming, understanding community and vital respite for carers too. Volunteering or donating helps keep these safe spaces open.

  3. Share the Knowledge: Use your voice online. Use the hashtag #CarersWeek to share resources, stories, and information from the official Carers Week website to help unearth the hidden support networks available to those who need them most.

This Carers Week, let’s make sure that the people who spend their lives holding things together for others are given the visibility, respect, and support they so richly deserve.
