Every year from 1 June to 7 June, the UK comes together for Volunteers’ Week, a dedicated time to say a massive "thank you" to the millions of people who give up their time to support causes close to their hearts. It is a celebration of selflessness, compassion, and community spirit.
While volunteering transforms lives across every sector, there is one place where its impact is felt with profound intensity, across the Neuro Therapy Network.
Across the UK, Jersey, and Gibraltar, the Neuro Therapy Network connects independent therapy centres that collectively support more than 16,000 people living with neurological and long-term health conditions every single week. Whether someone is navigating the daily challenges of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, Huntington's, or recovering from a stroke, these centres provide a lifeline.
But behind all the Hyperbric Oxygen and Physio sessions and specialised therapies lies a vital truth: the Neuro Therapy Network runs on the power of volunteers.
More Than Just Helping Out: The Varied Roles of a Network Volunteer
When you look inside a Neuro Therapy Network centre, you won’t just see volunteers answering phones or filing paperwork. They are woven into the very fabric of the therapies and community support provided.
Volunteers in the network step up in an incredible variety of ways:
Oxygen Therapy Operators: Many network centres provide Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Volunteers undergo specialised training to safely operate the oxygen chambers, ensuring that centre users feel secure, comfortable, and monitored during their sessions.
Physiotherapy Assistants & Gym Buddies: Physical mobility is a massive focus for neurological care. Volunteers help physically guide clients safely to equipment, offer an encouraging word during tough exercises, or act as spotters to ensure safety and well-being.
The Welcome Committee & Café Hosts: Living with a neurological condition can be deeply isolating. For many clients, the social aspect of visiting a centre is just as healing as the physical therapies. Volunteers run the coffee bars, greet newcomers, and spark up the conversations that turn a clinical space into a warm, joyful community.
Fundraisers & Trustees: Because these centres operate as independent charities, financial survival is a constant effort. Volunteers lead local fundraising events, run charity shops, and govern the organisations as Trustees, steering the ship so the doors can stay open.
A whole array of volunteering roles: The list is endless. From your initial call to a warm welcome, arranging getting members to their therapies, providing refreshments, a volunteer will probably be the person assisting you. Some Centres have a team of gardening and maintenance volunteers as well as IT and marketing help.
The Power of Empathy and Connection
What makes a Neuro Therapy Network volunteer truly invaluable isn’t just the tasks they complete; it’s the empathy they bring. Many volunteers are connected to neurological conditions themselves—perhaps they are a family member, a caregiver, or a friend of someone using the centre.
This shared understanding builds a unique environment of trust. When a member goes into a centre feeling exhausted or overwhelmed by their symptoms, a volunteer's warm smile and shared experience can change the outlook of their entire week. They create a space where clients don't have to explain their condition; they are just understood.
A Two-Way Street: What Volunteers Gain
Volunteering within the network isn't a one-sided gift. Ask almost any volunteer at a neurotherapy centre, and they will tell you they get just as much back as they give.
It provides a deep sense of purpose, a chance to learn highly specialised skills (like operating clinical equipment), and a community of lifelong friends. Watching someone regain mobility, smile through their pain, or find their confidence again provides a level of fulfilment that money simply cannot buy.
How You Can Get Involved This Volunteers' Week
As we celebrate Volunteers' Week, we encourage you to look at how you might share your own time and talents. If you want to make a direct, visible difference in the lives of people in your local area, reaching out to a neurotherapy centre is a perfect place to start.
Find Your Local Centre: Visit the Neuro Therapy Network Find a Centre Map to discover the closest facility to you.
Reach Out: Every centre has different needs. You might have digital skills, a knack for baking, a listening ear, or a desire to learn how to operate an oxygen chamber.
Spread the Word: If you can't volunteer right now, use this week to share stories from Volunteers’ Week on social media to highlight the hidden heroes making life better for thousands of families across the country.
To every single volunteer keeping the wheels turning, the coffee brewing, and the therapies running across the Neuro Therapy Network:
Thank you. You are the heartbeat of these centres, and your kindness changes lives every day.
